ETDP SETA's prompt and positive response to Government's call

The ETDP SETA took on the call by Government to increase support for Cooperatives in the country.

In partnership with the South African Youth Council and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, we recruited 18 Cooperatives, from all over South Africa, to empower them by equipping each Cooperative with relevant training and equipment as a start-up for their enterprises.

A Cooperative can be defined as a self-governing association of youth who come together to meet their economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise, organised and operated on each Cooperative’s principles.

One of the ETDP SETA programmes in its Annual Performance Plan is aimed at Youth Development. The purpose of the programme is to provide career development services and to increase access to occupationally directed programmes for employability and to create employment. Our strategic objective is to ensure access to the labour market through workplace experiential learning. We will ensure that the Cooperatives are supported through skills development by providing the necessary skills programmes and training.

In addressing the beneficiaries during the training and handover of equipment session, the CEO, Ms Sesi Nombulelo Nxesi informed all that this is a project which she holds very close to her heart as she believes that it is only through empowering of the Youth that true change can be lived. Her dream is for the Cooperatives to go back into their communities and to plough back. “It is only through creating sustainable opportunities for the youth, that we will appreciate the impact of Advancing Youth Economic Empowerment,” said the CEO.

Cooperatives are important in assisting the country to achieve economic development, improve rural livelihoods and to reduce poverty.

We remain committed to making a difference.
